An update on SOPA and PIPA: the 7000 site blackout on the 18th did a lot of damage to the proponents of the bill. The tide shifted, but not enough. These bills have been tabled but not crushed. This means they could still be brought up for a vote again during this legislative season. The problem now is a bill called OPEN, which is considered a watered-down version of PIPA. The good news is that, with OPEN, the department of Justice is not the one making the decision to shut down foreign sites. The bad news is that the US will still have control of which sites will and can be closed based on "terrorist activities, pirating, or a threat to the US economy".
The issue with this bill is not it's desire to destroy pirating and the sale of prescriptions outside of the US venue. This is about free speech inside and outside the US. If a bill like this passes, those of us on this list outside the US can find ourselves unable to communicate with those of us inside the US. Yahoogroups, Twitter, Facebook, and the like, can still be taken down because a business entity feels you are taking from their industry.
The other aspect of this bill is that infringes one nation's laws upon the world. The bill would work similar to the SOPA bill, where the MPAA would report their copyright infringement complaints against a website. The agency that would handle the complaint would then block the site but not take down the site, while an investigation occurs. So one benefit to this bill is there is at least due process, which is where SOPA and PIPA fell apart. But it is still a US agency that would make that decision. Groups like the MPAA do not want any agency to decide a copyright case because it releases their control over the industry.
So what I am asking is similar to what I asked for opposing SOPA and PIPA. Read up on the bill. If you feel like I do, contact your legislators and let them know that as the ones who put them into office, you will not support any bill or law that will infringe on the ability to use free speech in whatever way you see fit. We need to keep pushing them on this line. Once we give up any rights as people so that a business can prosper, we have sold out and we will not be able to go back.
