Devastating cyclone Nilam crossed the Tamil Nadu coast north of Chennai between Mamallapuram and Kalpakkam and later slammed into the Andhra Pradesh cost, leaving 11 people dead and causing some serious damage to property. The cyclone so far has claimed eight lives in Tamil Nadu and three in Andhra Pradesh. Incessant rains throughout the night have thrown normal life into a state of disarray in the coastal districts of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, caused flooding in several parts. The cyclone also pushed the Prathiba Kavery ship from Mumbai to the shore near Elliots Beach. Seventeen people, stranded on the ship, were however later rescued.

The tanker ran aground off the city coast due to high winds before the landfall of Cyclone Nilam, a report said. Thousands of people were evacuated from their homes in southeast India as a cyclone slammed into the coast, with officials warning of possible flooding and damage to houses.

Cyclone 'Nilam' has intensified into a severe storm with extremely heavy rainfall expected over North coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry even as the weather department warned of extensive damage to huts, standing crops and power lines. According to latest reports, the cyclonic storm has crossed Chennai and made landfall at Mahaballipuram. Four thousand people have been evacuated near Mahabalipuram. However, no major damage has been reported so far. The cyclone is expected to cross between Puducherry and Nellore in Andhra Pradesh close to Chennai this evening.
Tamil Nadu is on high alert after the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) warned of the approach of a cyclone 'Nilam' towards the state's north coast today. A deep depression which had formed in the Bay of Bengal intensified into a cyclone, causing rainfall across coastal districts in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. Rain clouds hung over Chennai, with the weatherman having forecast heavy rain in the region, schools and colleges have been shut in Chennai as well as nearby places. Fishermen in Nagapattinam, Chennai and the union territory of Puducherry have been asked to not venture into the sea.
Cyclone hit state Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh are bracing for Nilam. The cyclone is expected to move to region by Wednesday evening.

The Cyclonic Storm 'NILAM', moved northwestwards and lay centred at 0530 hours IST of today, the 31thth October 2012 near latitude 10.50N and longitude 81.50E, about 320 km south-southeast of Chennai and 220 km north of Trincomalee (Sri Lanka). The system would move north-northwestwards and cross north Tamil Nadu & adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coast between Cuddalore and Nellore, near Chennai by 31stst October, 2012 evening.
Under the influence of this system, rainfall at most places with scattered heavy to very heavy falls and isolated extremely heavy falls (25 cm or more) during next 24 hrs.
Sea condition will be high along and off north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coasts during next 36 hours.
