Undereye Circles Begone!
The Medical Solution
A good night's sleep alone won't do the trick. Read on for four ways to beat dark circles under your eyes-and send your bags packing while you're at it.
The Home Remedy
The Home Remedy
Save the cukes for your salad and reach for green tea bags instead. "Dark circles are pooled blood in the vessels under your eyes," explains Karyn Grossman, MD, a Los Angeles-based dermatologist. Tea's caffeine shrinks the vessels so they're less noticeable; the antioxidants reduce inflammation and puffiness (a.k.a. Bags). Steep two green tea bags for five minutes, let cool, then place over eyes for 15 minutes. Repeat once a week.
The Medical Solution
The go-to procedure most dermatologists use to correct dark circles is IPL, or intense pulsed light, says Dr. Grossman. During the procedure, short pulses of light are administered to the undereye area to vaporize visible blood vessels. (Don't worry, these are unneeded, errant vessels.) Bonus: IPL has also been shown to combat fine lines and wrinkles, so you'll probably walk out of the office with smoother skin, too. "This treatment may require two sessions, and the cost varies from $500 to $1,500 a visit," says Dr. Grossman.
The Makeup Trick "Properly camouflaging circles requires the right concealer," says Jillian Veran, makeup artist and senior beauty director for the philosophy cosmetics line. Do your circles look bluish? If so, Veran recommends a soft peach- or yellow-based concealer to neutralize them. If they have a red or pink hue, go for a product with a green base. Use a concealer brush (not fingers, which can tug at delicate skin) to apply the product under your lower lashes and up into the inner corners of your eyes so it completely covers your circles. Maybelline New York Cover Stick in Yellow and Green, $5.65 each; at drugstores.
