fasting
When someone realizes that there is a need for change in her life; that there are many things which need to be reformed to progress; then that realization is the most important step into transformation.
That progress is made though certain steps. For some, it will be about stopping to drink liquor. For others, to stop smoking. For others, to become vegetarian, and yet for others, to go to a religious gathering every week.
All the steps that we could perform to gain a different consciousness are welcomed in the spiritual path.
As a matter of fact, there is usually an "improvement " period of some sort at the beginning.
"Since I decided not to smoke, my nagging cough has disappeared," or "Since I decided to go to mass every Sunday, my angry behavior has diminished."
As we can notice, the common denominator is that we "improve" by taking things away.
If you look at any spiritual path, there is always something to "take away," that is something that we were doing or thinking which is superfluous or "negative."
The extent of that "taking away," is known is some spiritual philosophies as "renunciation."
Many religions praise renunciation as the means to "enlightenment; " nevertheless, the emphasis on "getting rid of things," many times will break the individual's will to continue in a path.
Spirituality is like training an athlete. If an athlete tries to perform a workout, which he is not capable yet, he will break down and he will not be able to perform well in a competition. How impressed others may be by knowing of the difficulty of a workout, is of no consequence in a competition
When our mentality is set on renouncing things without insight or deep understanding, that person will break down and create a mental image of the danger of the "outside," the temptations of the "corrupted ways" of common people who are able to "do" those things which are being "rightly" renounced.
For example:
Amy wanted a change in her life. She became vegetarian because she found out that meat is not healthy for you. Then, Amy met a "nice" spiritual person when she went to a religious gathering; her name is Tracy.
Tracy belongs to a religious group. In her group, Tracy was only allowed to mingle with people who belongs to her religion. Tracy renounced the rest of the world.
Tracy is not encouraged to socialize with co-workers outside work hours, also she is not allowed to specifically take yoga classes or play competitive sports professionally; moreover, Tracy is not allowed to study philosophy, psychology or any other studies which may shake her faith, and finally; Tracy is not allowed to date non-believers or to get married with anyone outside her faith.
For Amy, the above was a lot to "renounce;" but she was willing to do it because she admired Tracy.
She wanted to be like her.
Amy gave up her yoga classes. She gave up her friends. She stopped going to school to complete her degree in psychology. Her world was her religion.
Evidently, in the beginning she had the happiness of novelty. New friends, a new life, a new horizon. Amy improved her demeanor thanks to her new friends in that path of reformation. As time went by, however; Amy felt secluded. She felt that "the honeymoon" period was over.
She decided to quit… and with that her demeanor, her vegetarian diet, her time with "good" friends; all of that "improvement" was gone!
The above is the usual path of those who "quit" a reforming, renouncing religious path.
In time, Amy felt that she was missing something. She knew that her vegetarian diet was bringing benefits to her as well as following other "reforming" tasks which her religion professed as "Do not's," items.
Amy "missed" her life style with the religious group but did not want to relinquish the things that were prohibited to her. That was her dilemma.
The important item to remember is that any external activity performed with the purpose of changing the self, needs to be incorporated in the self; that is, it needs to be "natural."
In this respect, renunciation needs to eventually disappear.
Thus, true renunciation leads to renouncing renunciation.
"Reforming" a human being through the practice of ritualistic activities has the purpose of bringing greater awareness. If that awareness is not experienced, then the practice of ritualistic activities will be a source of repression in a human being in the extent that there is not greater consciousness.
A human being with a higher consciousness does not require external practices to flourish in life. For her a sense of gratefulness to life, a daily doses of being thankful of experiencing the greatness of life is the element necessary to flourish.
That gratefulness is the sunshine and water necessary to grow and transform.
That appreciation of life, that growth, is expressed in a happy face with a bright smile.
This is the ultimate aim of any reformation in the self. The fruit of the seed planted with care.

Manhattanhenge-Twice a year the sun rises & sets perfectly in line with the NYC grid.

Deadline
Sometimes no matter how hard and fast you work, you still miss a deadline. Is it the end of the world if a deadline is missed, especially if the deadline is self-imposed?
Maybe, the next time there's little chance in meeting a deadline, ask for an extension and re-schedule the deadline. Give yourself permission to relax and lower your stress levels. Then you'll have more energy to get back to working harder and faster.

Worries are an illusion. They make you live in the future, giving you
the belief that you are very busy and takes you away from the present.
Worries are an excuse for not doing what you really have to be doing. A
reactive person appears very busy and worried. With worry, no problems
can be resolved. A proactive person focuses attention on the present,
acts with initiative, and the understanding that being calm and free
from worry is far more effective.

Self Empowerment

Your strengths, talents, capabilities and resources are very important as the foundation of your self progress. Having a clear knowledge of them will help to keep you moving forward, and enable you to take up new opportunities when they arise. Our internal strengths create the foundation on which we make our decisions in life, how we relate to others and how we understand ourselves. For most people their strengths are understood but never made very conscious. They lie below the surface and are not openly talked about. Bringing them into our conscious understanding improves our process of self-empowerment. Also assess your areas of weakness or those aspects of life that are holding you back in some way and/or are causing you some sorrow or discomfort.

Exercise: Make a list of your strengths and weaknesses (5 each)

Now create questions (5-6) which will help in your self progress. Looking at your strengths and weakness, judge how effectively you are using these strengths to improve your personal and professional life, and what negative effects are your weaknesses (shortcomings) having on the same. These are some examples of questions that you can ask yourself at the end of each week:

How are my present strengths being used to improve my worth (value) at the workplace (office)? Is any weakness of mine proving to be an obstacle (barrier) in maintaining a healthy relationship with my spouse (partner)? Am I using my strengths in helping others or doing social service? Does any weakness exist inside me, which if removed, would make my relationships harmonious (peaceful) in the family and office?

Soul Sustenance

The Car-Driver Comparison To Aid Self Realization (Part 2)

If a good driver, while driving a car is distracted by the negative and disturbing scenes which he comes across and his attention is pulled in many different directions, he will make his journey unsafe increasing the probability of meeting with accidents. When the same principles are applied to the soul and the body, I also need to take care that, while traveling on the road of life, I am not distracted by scenes that are not useful to me e.g. when looking out through my eyes and I don't have to take in all the images, scenes and information along the way, otherwise I may meet with an accident. When listening through my ears, I don't have to take in all the words and everything that people say, otherwise I may meet with an accident. I can choose to take in what is useful for me, but I do not have to register distracting, negative and harmful images and words. Just like a driver, I see and understand situations, too I keep my eyes and ears open - it would be unsafe to ignore them completely, I need to be aware of them - but I look only for the positive in them, so that I remain focused and am not deflected from my goal of experiencing inner contentment and bliss, while making the journey.

I, as the driver in charge of this vehicle, the body, also need to take care that I do not drive rashly i.e. I learn to monitor the feelings and attitude that are transmitted outwards through my eyes, my words and my complete body language. Driving rashly i.e. transmitting negative energy in this way could harm any co-traveler on the road of life. When these feelings stay positive, filled with sweetness, purity and respect, that too helps to ensure that my journey passes smoothly and enjoyably. When I stay alert and aware in a driver conscious and drive carefully as explained in this and yesterday's message, my actions bring me closer to my spiritual truth and I am able to share my positivity with others around me. When I lose awareness for even a moment, there's danger either from me to others or vice versa.

Message for the day

Happiness increases when given to others.

Projection: We usually expect others to give happiness to us. We rarely ever think of giving happiness to others. We don't usually get what we expect because the other person is also expecting the same from us.

Solution: Whatever the kind of person we only have to make sure that we continue to give happiness to others without any expectations. For this we have to increase our own treasure of happiness by continuing to be happy under all circumstances.

BITTER GOURD HEALTH BENEFITS

by Dr. Sandra Habicht

Bitter gourd is a functional vegetable with beneficial effects on health

Bitter gourd is a popular vegetable in some Asian countries, where the health benefits of the plant are well-known—particularly, its ability to lower blood glucose in diabetics. Bitter gourd has been used to treat diabetes in traditional medicine and is now commercially available as tea (from fruits or leaves), juice, extracts, and pills. Although these products promise health benefits, most of the manufacturers do not offer scientifically proven data on the effectiveness of bitter gourd or their products. However, in recent years researchers worldwide have started to focus on the antidiabetic effects of bitter gourd. The goal is to provide safe and clear preparation and dosage recommendations so that consumers will realize the greatest benefit from consuming fresh bitter gourd or bitter gourd products.

It is scientifically proven: bitter gourd lowers blood glucose levels!

Bitter gourd treatments of cell cultures or feeding trials with laboratory animals such as mice or rats show bitter gourd does have blood glucose lowering properties. Bitter gourd is not like most medicinal drugs, which are effective only in one target organ or tissue; rather, it influences glucose metabolism all over the body.

Bitter gourd lowers dietary carbohydrate digestion

The glucose metabolism starts in the gut. Carbohydrates and sugars are metabolized to glucose (one type of sugar) before glucose is transported from the gut to the blood. Bitter gourd reduces the amount of glucose that is released into the blood by inhibiting the enzymes that break down disaccharides to two monosaccharides (e.g. glucose) (Oishi et al. 2007, Kumar Shetty et al. 2005). Bitter gourd can influence the transport channels for glucose, which also reduces glucose transport into the blood (Singh et al. 2004). This effect is important for the treatment of both Type I and Type II diabetic patients and helps to prevent high blood sugar levels after meals.

Bitter gourd plant insulin discovered

The pancreas reacts to increasing blood sugar levels by secreting insulin into the blood. Insulin helps to transport the sugar from the blood to the skeletal muscle and the fat tissue where it is used to produce energy. Insulin will also stop the liver to produce sugar from glycogen storages and to release the sugar into the blood.
Thus, insulin is necessary to lower high blood sugar levels. In Type I diabetes, also called insulin-dependent diabetes, the pancreas does not produce or secrete enough insulin to keep blood sugar levels low. Bitter gourd has been shown to be effective in treating Type I diabetes in rats or mice by increasing pancreatic insulin secretion Yibchok-Anun et al. 2006, Fernandes et al. 2007). Additionally, scientists found an insulin-like molecule in bitter gourd (Khanna et al. 1981). Although bitter gourd may reduce the number of insulin injections required to manage Type 1 diabetes, it cannot replace insulin treatment completely or heal this form of the disease.

Bitter gourd reverses insulin resistance

Bitter gourd can play a role in the prevention and treatment of Type II diabetes, which is also called insulin-independent diabetes or adult onset diabetes. This form of the disease usually occurs in people who are overweight and inactive. In Type II diabetes, the liver, skeletal muscle, and fat tissues do not respond adequately to insulin—they are "insulin resistant." Feeding trials with insulin resistant or Type II diabetic rats and mice have shown that bitter gourd helps to prevent or reverse insulin resistance (Nerurkar et al. 2008, Klomann et al. 2010). People with insulin resistance or those with a high risk of developing Type II diabetes have a good chance to prevent and treat the disease without drugs by increasing their physical activity and changing their diet.

Bitter gourd prevents diabetic complications

Chronically high sugar concentrations from Type I and Type II diabetes increase the risk of inflammation and oxidation in the whole body, leading to blindness, diabetic feet, kidney disease, stroke, or heart attack. Consuming bitter gourd can help prevent these complications, as it not only decreases blood sugar levels, but also has some antioxidative properties (Sathishsekar und Subramanian 2005, Klomann et al. 2010).

Bitter gourd can protect the body from other non-communicable diseases

Being overweight is one of the most important risk factors for diabetes and other diseases, and Type II diabetes is often accompanied by hypertension, high plasma cholesterol, or high plasma lipids. Together, these conditions increase the risk of stroke or heart attack. For overweight Type II diabetic patients, bitter gourd can help to improve health. In mice and rats, bitter gourd has been shown to reduce hypertension (Singh et al. 2004), plasma cholesterol (Nerurkar et al. 2008), and plasma lipids (Nerurkar et al. 2008). Apart from this, bitter gourd helps weight loss. There is also evidence that bitter gourd might be effective in cancer treatment

o

More bitter gourd does not help more.

Exclusive consumption of bitter gourd, bitter gourd juice, or other bitter gourd products can lead to dangerous hypoglycemia when consumed by diabetic patients under oral drug treatment, in too high dosages, by children, or on a hungry stomach. Pregnant or breastfeeding woman should not consume bitter gourd or bitter gourd products. Although bitter gourd can help prevent insulin resistance or severe diabetic complications, it is important to consider situations in which bitter gourd may be harmful to your healt
