NewDelhi:The scenic Kerala backwaters can now boast of an engineering marvel – the longest rail bridge in the country at 4.62km. The bridge is part of an 8.6km railway link connecting Idapalli to Vallarpadam in Kochi, where the shipping ministry has constructed the International Container Transhipment Terminal (ICTT).
Built by Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd at Rs 200 crore, the bridge came up in a record 28 months. "We used minimum cement to reduce greenhouse effect," said a rail official of the line that cuts through densely populated areas and the backwaters. Land acquisition being a sensitive issue in Kerala, RVNL took an elevated route , said managing director Satish Agnihotri. A40m-long girder was erected at a curve of 2.5 degrees, cutting down land use.
Land was acquired in even crowded areas with an "out-of-box" solution. Current market price of houses, without depreciation, was offered. A plot of similar size was given to the displaced in an equally or more developed area and each family paid rent for six months till the house came up.
The new bridge, which relegates the 3km Dehri-on-Sone bridge to second place, will allow even mega mother ships from Colombo to berth directly at Vallarpadam, saving $300 in transport costs per container.
