BAT-N-MOUTH AT WORLD-CUP
During the World Cup, there will be as many stars in the commentary box as on the pitch. There will be instances of playing and missing. We take a look at the most famous cricket commentators' gaffes down the ages
LEGS WIDE APART...ER...WHAT?
One of the biggest problems for cricket commentators is the fact that many cricketing terms — balls, slip, fine leg, etc — can be misconstrued by listeners who have double entendre rather than cricket on their minds. So you can imagine how many people had giggling fits when, during a Test match between England and Australia at Headlingley in 1961, commentator Brian Johnston described an Australian fielder in these terms: "There's Neil Harvey, standing at leg-slip, with his legs wide apart, waiting for a tickle!"
THE WEATHER GETS TANGLED UP
Most commentary bloopers tend to occur while describing the action on the pitch, but West Indian commentator Roy Lawrence managed to bewilder listeners when he described the weather during a Test Match between England and West Indies at Sabina Park thus: "It's another wonderful day here at Sabina Park...the wind shining and the sun blowing gently across the field."
WHAT'S THE BOWLER GOT HOLD OF?
Circumstances can sometimes conspire against even the most efficient of commentators. Well, they did so with a vengeance when England played West Indies at the Oval in 1976. Michael Holding was running in to bowl to English batsman Peter Wiley, and Brian Johnston had no option but to say: "Welcome to the Oval where the bowler's Holding, the batsman's Wiley." Of course, no one noted the comma in between and there were a few protest letters to the BBC.
WHAT THE AFAQ
Few players could have caused as much consternation to commentators as the relatively unknown Pakistani player called Afaq Hussain. When he was selected as part of Pakistan's team to tour England in 1962, commentators hoped he would not play. That did not make them forget him though. During a match at Lord's — a match in which Afaq was not playing — Rex Alston stunned listeners by first saying, "There's going to be a change of bowling. We are going to see Afaq to Knight at the Nursery End," and then adding: "What am I saying? He is not even playing!"
SOME APPLAUSE THAT!
Indian cricket followers have great affection for Henry Blofeld with his charming wit and his ability to talk of everything during a match. However, even he could get a bit tangled up. One of his spectacular mix ups was when he described Graham Gooch reaching 300 against India at the Oval and acknowledging the rapturous applause of the crowd. "Never before in the history of this great ground of ours," he said, "has a cloud crapped like this one!"
LAST BUT NOT THE LEAST, AS TONY SAID ON THE FINAL DAY OF THE
1983 WORLD CUP IN ENGLAND
'TODAY'S WEATHER IS LIKE AN INDIAN WOMAN, HOT AND MOIST '
INDIA WON THE CUP
