In some parts of the world, the number 13 is thought to be unlucky. And looking back on 2013, some may have felt that their fears had come true in the worst ways possible. Noticing a few highlighted photos of 2013 that have made it to our desk, it's evident that the year was a real lowlight on so many levels. It seems that the human race has completely 'lost the plot'.
In these dark days, unprecedented numbers have been killed in more and more parts of the world simply because one ideology does not agree with another. Millions more live in tension, fear and worry as they deal with the threat or aftermath of natural disasters – and wonder why God has brought on the floods and typhoons. Youth have been more active than ever setting fire to universities, police cars and policemen themselves. And the superpowers do not step in to help, unless they have a vested interest in those countries! The 'medal' for worst act of inhumanity has to be given to the one who flushed a newborn baby boy down a toilet! What has become of humanity today?
It's logical that if we continue on the same course of action, we are doomed. And now is a really important time to stop and take a good look at where we are heading as a human race – a time to return back to our humanity.
The Roman god Janus is depicted as having two faces, one looking toward the future and the other to the past. Appropriately, the month of January (with all of its linguistical variations) is named after Janus… let us use this ancient wisdom in our modern era. We need to be mindful of the past and its lessons, and at the same time we need to choose a future that benefits all of us.
Each one of us must make a difference by the choices we make. If we carry on with anger and revenge in our hearts, things can and will only get worse. As Mahatma Gandhi once said: 'An eye for an eye only makes the whole world blind.'
Do you realize that even sitting and watching the negative scenes on TV all day, complaining to others about the state of the world, and creating in oneself feelings of revenge, hatred or desiring retribution, are all adding to the 'pot' of negative energy in the world? No-one is an innocent bystander in this. With each negative or positive thought we create we are contributing to a corresponding state of reality. If what we see becomes a catalyst for us to do something productive, all well and good, but negativity by its nature usually breeds more negativity, and so the vicious cycle continues.
If we choose to focus on what's good (and there is still plenty to be found if we so desire to look for it), then we will contribute to the positive forces that are working in the world. It only takes a few to create light amidst the darkness just as one small candle in a darkened room is enough to show the way out.
Only when we get ourselves sorted will the world will be sorted. For this we must become masters and not followers. Rather than being led blindly, learn to lead by example instead; we can learn to be our own person and follow our personal truth and a considered course of action rather than agendas set by others. Lead by values and not by violence, by morals and not muscles, by principle of virtue and not power of vice. We need not be afraid to live our truth even if it means standing out from the crowd.
