The youth of yesterday: Victorian mugshots show criminals as young as 11
Mugshots of children as young as 11 convicted for crimes ranging from theft to breaking
and entering have been released for the first time since they were taken in the 1870s.
The images have been unveiled by Tyne and Wear Archives & Museum.
1. Aged just 11, Ellen Woodman was ordered to do seven days hard labour
after being convicted of stealing iron.

2. Mary Catherine Docherty, 14, was also sentenced to seven days hard labour
after being convicted of being involved with the theft of the iron.

3. Thomas Garretty, 18, along with Robert Bolam and William Salmon,
was convicted of stealing clothes and sentenced to 6 months.

4. Michael Clement Fisher, 13, was an accomplice of Henry Leonard Stephenson,
who were both charged with breaking into houses.

5. At the young age of 14, Henry Miller was charged with the
theft of clothing and sentenced to 14 days hard labour.

on this occasion he was sentenced for two months for stealing some shirts.

and was sentenced to two months in prison in 1873.

12. Patrick O'Neill, 19, spent 18 months in Newcastle City Gaol
after being caught and convicted of breaking into houses.
