A Modern Day Romeo And JulietAs the end of the english class neared, the students got noisier and more restless. The teacher was trying to hand out a new book to the class, but they just wouldn`t listen. Finally she just turned off all the lights. Everyone sat down and paid attention to the teacher. She passed out the books and told everyone to read the prologue for the next day. The bell rang a second later and the class was quite glad to leave. Now while all this was going on around her, Julie Maste was thinking about what she had to do that night. When their teacher handed out the books and gave them their homework, Julie wrote it down along side the rest of her homework. When the bell rang, she filed out with the rest of her class. Once out of the classroom, she hurried off in the direction of her locker. As soon as she arrived, her friend Kat Stevens appeared from the opposite direction. "Morning Kat," Julie greeted her friend. "Hello Julie. How was your english class?" Kat replied. "O.K. Noisy, as usual. Our teacher handed out the Romeo and Juliet books and told us to read the prologue. You?" Julie answered. Kat rolled her eyes. "Don`t ask," she said. "It was so boring. Our teacher droned on all class about our essays that are due on Monday." "Another essay?" Julie asked. Kat just rolled her eyes again and nodded. "Sheesh! You`d think he didn`t know anything besides essays." They chuckled. Just then, a tall good looking, blonde-haired guy showed up next to them. It was Robert McDree, the senior boys` football quarterback, and head jock of the school. He liked Julie, who didn`t care much for him, while Kat thought Julie was lucky and should go for him. "Hey Julie. You going to the dance tomorrow?" he asked. "Hello Robert," she replied. "I haven`t decided about the dance yet. Actually, I totally forgot about it. I`m so busy I probably won`t have time." "That`s a shame, I was hoping you`d be my date. Well if you do decide to go, you be sure to let me know," Robert said as he turned away. "We`ll see about that," Julie retorted as she opened her locker. "God Julie! You are so lucky, and you just throw it away. Do you know how many girls in this school would die at the chance to go to a dance with Robert McDree, or even to have him notice them?!" Kat exclaimed. "Well they can have him. I sure don`t want him. Ugh!" Julie replied. Julie looked at herself in her locker mirror. Her straight, and partially stringy - as Julie said, hair fell just below her shoulders. Her eyes were a greenish-blue colour. She didn`t have any glamourous features, she wasn`t overly pretty in any way, and she wasn`t overly tall or anything - just an average 5'3". "I don`t even know what he sees in me - I`m not pretty." Kat face appeared in the mirror beside her. "How can you say that - you are very pretty. I`m just surprised that you don`t have more guys after you!" Julie looked at Kat`s reflection in the mirror. Kat`s long blonde hair was pulled back into a ponytail that went halfway down her back. She had left a few long bangs down the sides of her face and had curled them. she had deep blue eyes, and was a couple inches taller than Julie. "I`m surprised the guys aren`t after you," Julie said to her friend. "You could be a model!" "Ugh!" Kat shuddered, then added sarcastically, "Yeah, that`s just what I want to do." They laughed. "Anyhoo...you know you really should go to the dance you know. It`ll be fun, and it will get you out for once," Kat told Julie. "I know. I would like to go, just not with him," Julie replied. Just then she looked down the hall a little ways. "Now there`s someone I would go to the dance with." Kat followed her gaze, and saw Seth Struge, the guy Julie had had a crush on since the start of the year. He was in their science class. "I don`t see how you can like him, especially when Rober-" "It`s very easy to like him," Julie cut her friend off in mid-sentence. "He`s good looking. He`s very nice and sweet, and he always helps us in class." Julie sighed as she glanced down the hall once more. Seth was standing by his locker, talking to his friends. He had fairly short black hair, and (Julie had noticed) brown eyes. He was just a bit taller than Julie. One thing Kat always pointed out about him was his glasses and braces, but Julie always said that she didn`t mind that. Julie had glasses herself, but only for reading. "Well, come on Julie," Kat interrupted her thoughts. "It`s lunchtime and you can gawk and stare at him all you want in science. But for now I`m getting hungry and the caf line is going to be insane." They finished with their lockers and went down to the caf. After they had fought their way through the caf line, they took their lunches to a staircase in the back of the school. They quite often sat on this staircase to talk and just get away from the crowds in the school. Noone used that particular staircase much during lunch, if at all. Once in a while the occasional teacher would go by, but that was about it. As they were eating, Kat would look at Julie with a mischievous look in her eye every once in a while. Julie would look back at Kat with one eyebrow raised and a curious look on her face. Finally Kat spoke. "Have you thought anymore about the dance?" Julie shook her head as she took another bite of her sandwich. "Well, I think you should go. And personally I think you should go with Robert, but that`s just my opinion because I also realize that you don`t want to, and probably won`t go with him." Julie nodded and was about to say something, but Kat wasn`t finished. "So I have come up with a solution..." Julie looked up from her lunch bag with interest. "Don`t go with Robert. Just go stag with me. What ya say?" Julie smiled and nodded. "Sounds good," she replied. "Thanks," she said as she gave Kat a hug. "Maybe we should go get our tickets then, before they`re all sold out," Julie said. They finished up their lunches then headed to the caf a second time. After they had bought the tickets and tucked them away safely, Kat looked at her watch and said, "We`ve still got half an hour before class starts. Any ideas?" "We could go swing on the bars," Julie suggested. Kat nodded her head in agreement. They headed out of the caf and out to the bike bars. The bars were great for hanging around, swinging on, and sitting on to just talk and hang out with a friend or two. The two of them quite often took off and went somewhere at lunch. Sometimes out to the bike bars and sit by the tree nearby, sometimes over to the city park, and sometimes just to a store to pick something up or a close-by fast food joint. And sometimes they just stayed in, talking in the staircase or reading in the library. They were never bored at lunchtime. About ten minutes before class started they went back inside and headed up to their lockers. After they had grabbed their binders and science textbooks, they took the long was around to their science classroom. The two of them walked around the upper floor for about five minutes before settling in their seats in class. Seth was already in the class, talking with a couple of his friends. The desks in the class were set up in rows of two, with the desks pushed together in pairs. Julie and Kat sat near the back, with Julie on the left and Kat on the right. Kat often complained about where they sat, but Julie loved it because Seth sat one row in front and to the left of her, beside his friend Mark Mathian. The four of them quite often worked together on class projects or helped each other on worksheets and textbook work. Sometimes they all teamed up for labs, also. The four of them were pretty good class friends, but outside of school the girls rarely saw Seth and Mark, except at the mall occasionally. And at first Julie didn`t realize she had a crush on Seth, until he was sick for a week and wasn`t at school. Kat nearly had to tie her down because she was so worried about him. She would ask Mark everyday how Seth was doing. That same weekend the girls were hanging out at the mall when they ran into the guys at the music store. The four of them ended up walking around for the rest of the day and eating lunch together. Julie couldn`t have been happier, and Kat knew it, but neither of them let it show. Now today`s science class was pretty boring, they took notes on the unit they would be starting the next day. Julie was happy enough though, she got to say "Hi" to Seth. The rest of the day passed by uneventful. "Thanks Mom!" Julie said as she stepped out of the car. "Thanks for the ride, Mrs. Maste," Kat said as she jumped out on the opposite side. "You`re quite welcome. You girls have fun," Mrs. Maste replied. "We will!" Julie and Kat said together. The car pulled away and the girls turned towards the school. They waited in line for a few minutes, then handed in their tickets, showed their student cards, and went to drop off their coats.
