HADITH:
The Prophet heard someone praising another and exaggerating in his praise. The Prophet said, "You have ruined or cut the man's back (by praising him so much). [Sahih Bukhari: Volume 3, Book 48, Number 831 ]
The following is Abu Bakr Siddique (radi-Allahu-anhu)'s famous dua when anyone praised him:
"O Allah, You know me better than I know myself, and I know myself better than these people who praise me. Make me better than what they think of me, and forgive those sins of mine of which they have no knowledge, and do not hold me responsible for what they say."
