Good Day Brothers and Sisters, Its Monday, 21st February 2011 In Monday's health bytes, we have three short tips HOT TAP WATER WARNING Most water companies will tell you, that you should let the cold water run for a minute before using the water for drinking or cooking. This helps you to avoid drinking impurities that may be in the water from sitting in the pipes all night, esp. first thing in the morning. But you should also avoid drinking hot water, or using hot water for food, straight out of the tap. It is better to use cold water, then heat it up in the microwave or stove if needed. Ever wonder why? Get a large clear container, go to your hot water heater spigot, and fill up the container with hot water directly from the tank. Use hot pads and take precautions not to burn yourself. It is also a good idea to keep the water heater set only as high as you need it, to limit the chance for burns and cut down on those electric bills. Let the container with the water sit on your counter for a few hours. Chances are you'll see cloudy water, and by the time everything settles, you'll also have a mineral grit at the bottom of the container. The heating elements in a standard water heater become encrusted over time with minerals, and these minerals do get into the water a bit. Most experts recommend that you drain off a gallon of water at that spigot every month, to help drain off the impurities, and to help your water heater to work better, and last longer. Once your family sees the sediment, it'll probably cure them of using hot water direct from the tap for consumption. POST IT...on your calendar. A study in the journal Nutrition has showed that walnuts are a good source of melatonin, which, in addition to helping regulate our biological clocks, is also a powerful antioxidant. The study, conducted by researchers at the University of Texas and supported by the California Walnut Industry, found that the melatonin in walnuts can improve resistance to oxidative stress caused by toxic free radicals by eliminating them before they cause harm. Walnuts also contain omega-3 fatty acids, which have been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease and inhibit certain types of cancer. The researchers fed rats either a regular diet or walnuts and then measured their serum melatonin levels. Those that were fed walnuts showed a threefold increase in blood melatonin concentrations -- and an increase in serum antioxidant power than the rats fed a regular diet. Although the study didn't address how many walnuts one would have to consume daily to get these benefits, the health advantages of walnuts are clear. Go get em ... Walnut cake anyone??? . And Finally, CHECK OUT THE LINK section With all the holiday food that is going to get eaten at holiday parties and family dinners, my thoughts turn to nutrition. Would you believe I found a great site on nutrition data? My favorite thing is the search engine where you put in the food and it tells you the nutritional value of it. I recommend that everyone start at the ND Quick Start link. This will really help you make the most out of the site. It covers everything you really need to know to use the site. The site is about analyzing what you eat. You can even analyze your own recipes for nutritional value. Just list the ingredients and the method of cooking it and there you go ... But while it is tasty what is its nutritional data? Add the ingredients to your pantry, then you can update the quantity you need and find out its nutritional information as a recipe. You'll notice in the middle of the front page that there are some great Free tools and even diet tips. You know another really great use for this site – is you can find nutritional data for some of your favorite places to eat out like Pizza Hut (which is a real weakness of mine). I put in pizza in the search engine and it came up with different pizzas from different pizza places. I scrolled down till I found Pizza Hut and the pizza I ate. I found out that it's not too bad for you if you aren't eating it all the time. It's a great source of Protein and Selenium but is high in Sodium. I think this site is a real keeper. It'll help me keep track of my recipes and also help keep the food I get at a restaurant in perspective nutritionally. ~ Amanda (from the www.worldstart. com site) *+*+*+*+*+*+ *+*+*+*+* +*+*+*+*+ *+*+*+*+* + Your comments and feedbacks always welcome ..
