Actress Anne Hathaway, the co-host of this year's Academy Awards ceremony at Hollywood's Kodak theatre, changed outfits several times throughout the show. The Alice In Wonderland star chose a Valentino gown for the red carpet.
Natalie Portman's Black Swan co-star Mila Kunis was one of the first A-listers to turn up. The actress wore a graceful Elie Saab violet haute-couture gown.
Winter's Bone star and best actress nominee Jennifer Lawrence wore a simple Calvin Klein dress made for her by designer Francisco Costa. The 20-year-old lost out to Natalie Portman in the category.
Cate Blanchett chose a Givenchy dress for the glittering ceremony. The pleated, pale-wisteria dress was embroidered with pearls, crystals covered in leather and a swathe of yellow beads around the neck and back.
It was not Amy Adams' L'Wren Scott dress that drew attention from the fashionistas, but the reported $1.35m (£800,000) worth of jewellery that she wore.
Best supporting actress nominee Hailee Steinfeld wore a Marchesa dress for the ceremony. The 14-year-old says she helped design the peach tulle gown.
Halle Berry floated up the red carpet in another Marchesa gown. She told one reporter that she is a "slave for fashion" and loves seeing the stars glammed up at the Academy Awards.
